Dear Westminster Community,

As you read this week’s What’s up WPS, you will understand what we mean when we say that Westminster Public Schools offers something for everyone.

Whether it’s sports, spelling, science, performing or visual arts, our students have access to an amazing number of opportunities to enrich their lives outside the classroom.

This edition of What’s up WPS provides a detailed look at our Celebrating Excellence! competition that was held last week at Westminster High School.  To fully understand what this friendly competition means to our students, make sure you watch the reaction of Elijah Winter Moon Pumroy after she won the elementary school spelling bee competition.

Last week, our Board of Education also recognized students from The Metropolitan Arts Academy and Colorado STEM Academy for their successes in statewide artistic competitions.  Not only did they take their talents to a larger stage, they excelled.

Judges at ThesCon 2023 rated our students as “superior”, commenting on their "commitment to character", "amazing concentration", "strong acting choices", and "unbelievable singing."

Ten students from Colorado STEM Academy were honored by the Colorado PTA for their artistic reflections on the theme of “I am hopeful because …”  Among the impressive works was a painting by Isabella Cruz Alfaro titled “Growing Together.”  It addresses the very real issue of mental health and the need for compassion and understanding.  It is a powerful piece of art.

We also have information and a registration link for our summer athletic camps being run by our Futures Program.  I am so proud of the work we have put into making sure that our children have chances to participate in low-cost organized sports programs.  We know those extracurricular activities that bond kids to school is backed up in research in keeping students engaged.

Our Futures Program is always looking for volunteers to help us grow and succeed, and I encourage you to reach out to smccoy@wps.org if you would like to support our kids.

It is important, but it is also fun.

Kindest regards,

Dr. Pamela Swanson
